Roswell Park Cancer Institute
In 1898, Roswell Park opened as the nations first cancer research, treatment & education center. RPCI, is a public benefit corporation that is internationally renowned, and is a major affiliate of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. RPCI is dedicated to providing the highest quality total care to the cancer patient; to conducting research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer; and to educating the public and the next generation of those who study and treat cancer.
RPCI is the only upstate New York facility to hold the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov) designation of "comprehensive cancer center" and one of 39 such centers in the United States. Since 1971, Roswell Park has been recognized by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center. This designation means that a cancer center's combined research, treatment and educational programs have weathered extensive peer review, met rigorous national standards, and made fundamental contributions to reducing the cancer burden.
RPCI is also a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of the nation's leading cancer centers. A not-for-profit organization, the NCCN brings together the best minds in science to engineer continuous quality improvements in cancer care; improves the effectiveness of cancer care delivery through the ongoing collection and analysis of outcome data on a national basis; enhances communications and collaboration among member institutions; offers access to the latest, most promising clinical trials; and provides best practice guidelines and measurement tools.
Cancer research is a core element of its mission. Groundbreaking research by RPCI scientists has led to greater understanding of the nature of cancer and to major advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment that are now in use worldwide. RPCI instituted the nation's first chemotherapy program, pioneered studies on the relationship between smoking and lung cancer and developed photodynamic therapy (PDT) and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. A comprehensive cancer genetics program, now under development at RPCI, will rival the world's leading programs in that field. The Institute also made significant contributions to the landmark human genome project. RPCI's Center for Pharmacology and Therapeutics is one of the few centers in the nation capable of all phases of drug development, from the conceptual stage through manufacturing and testing. This year RPCI's strong basic and clinical research programs attracted major research grants and contracts totaling more than $75 million. Upstate New York Transplant Services
Headquartered in downtown Buffalo and established in 1981, Upstate New York Transplant Services is among the leading procurement organizations in the United States, and is one of the only eight centers nationwide to house laboratory services, and organ, tissue and eye procurement in one location. With the addition of Community Blood Services, Upstate New York Transplant Services has become the first organization of its kind nationwide. Upstate New York Transplant Services operates as a non-profit serving the eight counties of Western New York and works to assist donor families, coordinate the donation process and increase knowledge and awareness within the community regarding the Gift of Life.
Upstate New York Transplant Services routinely has helped to secure higher rates of donation in Western New York than the national average. When approached following the death of a loved-one for organ donation, Western New York families give consent nearly 90% of the time the national average is roughly 60%. Due to this generosity, Upstate New York Transplant Services has ranked in the top ten procurement organizations nationwide in terms of rates of consent for seven of the past eight years.
There has been tremendous growth as Upstate New York Transplant Services since inception. Twenty-five years ago, the organization had a staff of a little over a dozen and a thin operating budget. Today, Upstate New York Transplant Services employs over 150 Western New Yorkers, has affiliations with twenty-eight regional hospitals and transplant centers and other procurement organizations across the country. As recently as 1997, Upstate New York Transplant Services had just 200 donors; in 2006 the organization neared 1000. In the summer of 2007, Upstate New York Transplant Services added community blood banking services bringing both a significant savings to area hospitals and assurance to Western New York donors that their blood donations remain local.
The organization’s network and success have hand-in-hand, and as a result, Upstate New York Transplant Services has been able to spread the message that transplantation is vital and transplantation saves lives. Upstate New York Transplant Services is currently headed by President & CEO Mark Simon, and Chair of the Board of Trustees Dr. Margaret Paroski.
