Thanks to The News for its article "Earning big in Buffalo" and two editorials. I write with heartening news about job growth and creation at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. From 2001-2004 the BNMC Research Institutions -- the University at Buffalo, Roswell Park and Hauptman-Woodward -- have hired approximately 300 new scientists, researchers and principal investigators. Many of them were recruited through collaborative efforts. They bring grants, post-doctorate assistants and the promise of increased research funding, all of which is good for the local economy.

The Buffalo Life Sciences Complex will eventually employ more than 500 people, about half of whom will be recruits. To put these efforts into a broader framework, the institution technology transfer offices and BuffLink seek to commercialize the cutting-edge technologies being developed. The intent is to generate positive economic impact through job creation and attracting industry to the area.

Much remains to be done but as you can see, the investment that has been made at the Medical Campus is already yielding good paying jobs. I invite the citizens of Western New York to come and see the signs of progress already in place.
