BUFFALO, NY— For the first time, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) is hosting National Employee Health & Fitness Day, the largest worksite health and fitness promotion event in the country. BNMC and its partners join thousands of companies, schools, and organizations nationwide in promoting healthy lifestyle and physical activity in the work place. Today’s event is sponsored by the BNMC and Be Active New York State, and is being held at Roswell Park’s WJK Park & Gardens from 11 am – 2 pm.

Nat’l Employee Health and Fitness Day kicks off BNMC WOW! – or Walking on Wednesdays. WOW is a guided walking group that meets every Wednesday throughout the summer during the lunch hour. Each 30-minute guided walk begins at WJK Park and features a different route each week.

Local employers participating in Nat’l Employee Health & Fitness Day include Kaleida Health, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center, Buffalo Medical Group, University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions, Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired, URS Corporation, and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. These organizations collaborate as part of the BNMC Healthy Worksites Program to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity in the workplace.

Health and wellness are critical components of the BNMC vision. Through the Healthy Worksites Program we foster strong partnerships, make changes to the physical environment, sponsor wellness events, promote healthy messages, and influence institutional policies. Our goal is to be a national model in worksite health promotion and related activities” said Michael Ball, BNMC Project Manager.

While it's a day to celebrate, it's also a day to encourage year-round strategic investment by employers in their human capital,” said Phil Haberstro, Director of Be Active New York State. Health promotion programs are not a choice, but rather a necessity, to manage health care costs and increase productivity.”

Research confirms that individuals who are physically active and live a healthy lifestyle are less likely to miss work, are more productive while at work, have fewer medical claims, have lower disability costs and are much more satisfied in their jobs.

The BNMC Wellness Committee- which sponsors the Healthy Worksites Program – is dedicated to supporting employee wellness programs and activities throughout the year, and to encouraging employees to make healthy choices.
